We Need To Support Planned Parenthood

This image from Post Secret is exactly why we need Planned Parenthood.

Over the last several months, Planned Parenthood has been under even more intense attack than usual. Despite the fact that abortion accounts for only 3% of their services (36% of their services were for contraception, 31% for STI screening and treatment, 17% for cancer screening and prevention), the anti-choice folks are using the fact that the organization provides abortions services to justify cutting federal funding. They’ve also been accusing the organization of racist bias with claims that PP targets African-Americans. Fortunately, their New York billboard making this claim was taken down. And they conveniently ignore the fact that PP’s Title X funding can not be used to pay for abortion services

Call for Participants: Survey on Healthcare for Transgender Folks

I got the flyer below in my in-box today. While I don’t know this person myself, the person who sent it says that they’re an active supporter of and adviser to LGBTQ youth groups, as well as being dedicated to their own activism and education work. This study has the potential to become a tool that activists and patients can use to advocate for higher levels of appropriate & sensitive health care in the US.

See below and pass it on!

As a graduate student at Smith College for Social Work I am conducting a study to develop a better understanding, from a trans person’s viewpoint, what good care and treatment by a primary care healthcare provider looks like. This recruitment letter has the …

Partners of Women Who Have Abortions Are in the Loop

According to some new research from the Guttmacher Institute, the majority of women seeking abortions (82%) report that the men with whom they became pregnant were aware of the abortion. What’s more, nearly 80% of the women said that the men were supportive of their decision.

The paper, Perceptions of Male Knowledge and Support Among U.S. Women Obtaining Abortions, also reports that 88% of women living with their male partner and 87% of women married to their male partner said that the men knew about it and that they were supportive (82% and 87%, respectively). Not surprisingly, I think, the numbers go down for women who were separated, divorced, in a relationship less than a year old, or not in a relationship. But …

Announcing Scarleteen’s New Provider Database- Add Your Organization Now!

If you’re a regular reader here, you’ve probably seen some posts about Scarleteen.com. That’s because it’s an amazing organization and it’s one of a very few sexuality resources for young people that offers accurate and direct information without judging or shaming them.

They’ve just launched a new database project and it’s going to be amazing. Here it is, in their own words:

One of the best ways to find quality sexual healthcare and other in-person help services is by asking people we know and trust for a recommendation. But that can be difficult, especially for young people: so many are either ashamed about sexual healthcare and other related services, or are afraid that disclosing they’ve gotten care will result in a breach of their

Call for Participants: Documenting Alternative Sexualities with the Leather Archives & Museum

The Leather Archives & Museum is an amazing organization. They collect, preserve, and exhibit the histories of the BDSM and leather communities. A lot of the ephemera, artwork, films and literature produced by communities of erotic affiliation gets lost or destroyed and the LAM is doing a huge service to these communities and to sexology by preserving them.

I just received a press release calling for people to document their “alternative” sexual practices as part of their collection. They’re especially interested in hearing from people who don’t identify as part of or participate in the BDSM communities. Check out the call for participants below and get in touch with Clarisse if you want to be part of this project.

Polyamory Expressive Arts Group Forming

Following up on last week’s post about a support group for polyamorous folks, this showed up in my in-box. See below and pass it on!

The Living Arts Counseling Center presents:

An Expressive Arts Psychotherapy Group for Polyamorous Couples and Individuals

Are you polyamorous? Non-monogamous? In an open relationship? Curious about exploring this territory together with your partner(s)?

In a judgment-free, safe, and playful space, we will use tools from expressive arts therapy to explore issues of open relationships, including jealousy, boundaries, rule-making/rule-breaking, sex, safer sex, love, emotional intimacy, loneliness, and what to tell the in-laws, the neighbors, or your best friend.

Come find community with others exploring similar territory!

This group is open to primary couples of all genders and orientations, as well …

Polyamory Psychotherapy Group Forming

Although more people are discovering and exploring polyamory, it can be hard to find the support you need. A lot of therapists assume that poly folks can’t make a commitment or believe that their problems are due to being poly even though they’re the same issues and difficulties monogamous people have. (The Poly Friendly Professionals list is a good resource, btw.)

Akhila Kolesar, Ph.D. is forming a polyamory support group on Saturdays in San Francisco, so if you’re looking for some help navigating the challenges of your relationships, here’s a good place to go. Here’s the info from her flyer:

POLYAMORY PSYCHOTHERAPY GROUP

Saturdays 1-2:30pm
Convenient Hayes Valley Location

Facilitated by Akhila E. A. Kolesar, Ph.D.

Polyamory is a special relational orientation that offers

Porn Planet: A New Resource For Talking With Youth About Porn

In all of the discussions, debates, and arguments about porn, one of the few things that most people can agree on is that most porn is terrible sex education. And this is even more important when we’re talking about how teens and young adults, who often lack access to accurate sex-positive information, end up copying porn.

Unfortunately, a lot of people are hesitant to open up a conversation with young people about porn. Maybe they don’t know how to start. Maybe they don’t feel confident in their abilities to talk about sex. Maybe they think that they don’t know enough about porn or that they don’t know how to talk about it without showing sexually explicit images. Maybe they have their own judgments about porn …

Advocates for Informed Choice Needs Your Help

Advocates for Informed Choice is an amazing organization. They’re advocating for the civil rights of children who are born with variations of sex anatomy and it’s important work.

When children are born with differences in sexual development, such as being intersex, it’s quite common for medical folks to pressure the parents into consenting to genital surgery to “correct” it. But the surgeries are not as effective as many folks might think and there are many unresolved legal and ethical questions.

Fortunately, AIC is working to change that and to help parents make the best decision for their children. The organization is a finalist in the $10,ooo Ashoka Changemakers competition and they need your vote to win. Please click on this link and vote for “Resolve: …
