How Pegging Can Help Save The World

It’s a cliche that before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes, but that’s because there’s a lot of truth to that statement. After all, once you’ve experienced something from another person’s perspective, it’s much easier to imagine what it’s like for them. That’s one reason why I think pegging can go a long way toward improving things. Pegging is the term for when women use dildos and strap-on harnesses with male partners. (Is there a different term when people of other genders use strap-ons with male partners?) And while the main reason people do it is because it’s lots of fun, I think there’s an added benefit that lots of folks don’t know about.

There have been plenty of books …

Upcoming Workshop: How to Be a Top Presenter

Do you teach workshops or seminars on sexuality and relationships for adults? Have you ever wondered what makes some classes so much more engaging? If you want to discover how to create dynamic presentations that people respond to, come to my workshop at Good Vibrations on July 24!

I’ve taken the research on adult learning and created an easy-to-use structure that will give you a foundation for your classes while also creating enough flexibility to allow for spontaneity. I’ve used it for 45 minute presentations, two-hour long seminars, day-long trainings, and semester-long university courses. It’s easy to learn, simple to apply, and will help you make sure you don’t leave any of the essential ingredients to successful teaching out.

Here’s the workshop description, along with …

Sign up for the NSRC Summer Institute on Sexuality

Each year, the National Sexuality Resource Center brings undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral students in sexuality from around the country to San Francisco for the Summer Institute on Sexuality. It’s an amazing opportunity to visit an amazing city during one of the most beautiful times of the year and to learn plenty of fascinating stuff about sex. Plus, they always schedule it so that students can go to the SF Pride Parade, one of the most fabulous events in the world! This year, it’s happening June 20-July 15.

I’m honored to be teaching my How to Be a Top Presenter class as part of the Institute. Although I’ll be offering a 3-hour version of this one at Good Vibrations in July, the class at the …

Sex-Positive Glossary Plug-in for WordPress

I just discovered a really great WordPress plug-in that I’d like to help promote.

The WP Simple Sex-Positive Glossary will look through your content and turn any of the sexuality terms into links that’ll take readers to the definition of that word on Scarleteen or sexuality.about.com. It’s super easy to install and works great. Here are a few examples: sex, bisexual, safer sex, communication, kegel exercises.

I’m giving it a try- my regular links are in my standard orange color and the new ones look like this. If you want to make similar changes to the style of these links or if you want to make the links open in a new tab, you’ll need to edit the php file, but you certainly …

Finally! A Texas School Board Votes for Sex Education

It’s about time these folks got their act together. The Midland, Texas school board decided that their abstinence-only sexual propaganda program wasn’t working. Of course, there’s been plenty of research showing that, but what changed their minds was the 150 pregnancies among their students since the start of the school year in August. Since their school year began on August 23, that’s a pregnancy every 1.5 days.

The new plan is to shift to an abstinence-plus program called “It’s your game, keep it real.” The idea is to offer both abstinence and risk reduction information and while the Superintendent is reminding parents that information about abstinence isn’t going away, and that kids opt out if they or their parents want, lots of folks …

I’ll See You At Sex::Tech

I always enjoy going to sexuality conferences. The presentations and the conversations with other folks in the field are an amazing way to keep current on what’s happening. But it’s even more fun with I get to present and I’m thrilled to be speaking at this year’s Sex::Tech conference in San Francisco.

Sex::Tech is put on by ISIS (Internet Sexuality Information Services), an amazing organization that helps develop solutions for getting sex education and information to the people who need it. They do some really interesting work, like training service providers to use the internet and social media better, create internet outreach plans, and design computerized behavioral risk assessment for sexual health and disease prevention.

The conference focuses on media, youth, and sexual health. …

Sex Education, Live Demonstrations, and Northwestern University

This post also appeared on the Good Vibrations Magazine.

A few weeks ago, Northwestern University professor J. Michael Bailey did something that ruffled a lot of feathers.

He teaches a lecture class on the science of sexuality and in order to supplement the course, he organizes a series of optional presentations with guest speakers. These sessions are 100% voluntary, none of the material presented is included on exams, and he puts them together on his own time and for no pay. He does it because hearing from people who actually engage in various sexual practices puts a human face on it. His guest speakers have included a panel of gay men, a transsexual performer, convicted sex offenders, swingers, and a plastic surgeon.

Now, I …
