Call for Participants: Research on BDSM and Its Effects on Trauma and Shame

Another really interesting research project came through my RSS feed today. Here’s the text from the survey landing page. Check it out and pass it on!

As a student at Goddard College I am gathering stories from individuals who have experienced sexual trauma and have, either successfully or unsuccessfully, intentionally used BDSM to cope with, treat, or otherwise re-direct their emotions around the issue. BDSM is a compound acronym referring to Bondage, Discipline, Dominance, Submission, Sadism and Masochism among other variants in sexual exploration. For the purposes of this survey it is the term used to account for all “alternative” sexual practices related to the mentioned activities.

This interview is being administered under the assumption that you, as the interviewee, have at some point willingly

Call for Participants: Research on Experiences With Porn

Much of the writing about porn rests on the assumption that porn causes harm to the viewer, even though there isn’t actual research to support that claim. A new research project showed up in my in-box and I think it has the potential to finally answer some of the questions about porn.

Porn Research is a new project that wants to find out about people’s relationships with porn and how they feel about it, without assuming anything one way or another. It’s not the first time that someone has tried to find out about how viewers experience porn. For example, David Loftus’ book Watching Sex: How Men Really Respond to Pornography describes what his research came up with and it’s not what you usually hear

Call for Participants: Research on Women’s Sexual Desire in LTRs

The folks at the Center for Sexual Health Promotion have been cranking out some amazing research about sexual practices lately. I just ran across their newest call for participants: they’re looking for women in long term relationships to explore how they experience sexual desire. Check it out below, and pass it on!

Hello,

Our research team at The Center for Sexual Health Promotion is conducting a study about the ups and downs of women’s sexual desire in the context of long-term committed relationships. Although there is a fair amount of research that has examined women’s sexual desire, little research examines how this may change within the context of one relationship.

Women who are at least 18 years of age and have been in their current

New Research: Young Couples Disagree About Whether They’re Monogamous

This post also appeared on the Good Vibrations Magazine.

I don’t watch a lot of TV these days, but back when I did, there was a subplot on Friends when Rachel & Ross “took a break” in their relationship, during which Ross had sex with someone else. When they got back together, it turned into an ongoing source of drama. Rachel thought that he had cheated because, by her definition, they had still been in a relationship even if they were taking some time apart. Ross didn’t think so since they were “on a break,” which meant to him that the rules of being in their relationship didn’t apply.

Miscommunications of this sort are pretty common, as I’m sure most of you know

Call for Participants: Research on Women’s Experiences of Porn

This seems to the the day for me to get requests for research participants. A former student of mine is gearing up for her dissertation and she’s looking for women who watch or read sexually explicit media to take a survey. Here’s the info:

Are You a Woman Who Views, Reads, or Listens to Pornography, Erotica, Romance Novels, and/or any other Sexually Explicit Materials?

If so, please share your experiences!

Complete a Short Survey (30 min or less) and Contribute to a Scholarly Understanding of Women’s Experiences with Sexually Explicit Materials

My name is Kari Hempel and I am a female psychology graduate student who is doing my dissertation research on women’s experiences with sexually explicit materials. For too

Call for Participants: Survey on Healthcare for Transgender Folks

I got the flyer below in my in-box today. While I don’t know this person myself, the person who sent it says that they’re an active supporter of and adviser to LGBTQ youth groups, as well as being dedicated to their own activism and education work. This study has the potential to become a tool that activists and patients can use to advocate for higher levels of appropriate & sensitive health care in the US.

See below and pass it on!

As a graduate student at Smith College for Social Work I am conducting a study to develop a better understanding, from a trans person’s viewpoint, what good care and treatment by a primary care healthcare provider looks like. This recruitment letter has the purpose

Call for Participants: Documenting Alternative Sexualities with the Leather Archives & Museum

The Leather Archives & Museum is an amazing organization. They collect, preserve, and exhibit the histories of the BDSM and leather communities. A lot of the ephemera, artwork, films and literature produced by communities of erotic affiliation gets lost or destroyed and the LAM is doing a huge service to these communities and to sexology by preserving them.

I just received a press release calling for people to document their “alternative” sexual practices as part of their collection. They’re especially interested in hearing from people who don’t identify as part of or participate in the BDSM communities. Check out the call for participants below and get in touch with Clarisse if you want to be part of this project.

Once Again, There’s Confusion About What Sex Is

This post also appeared on the Good Vibrations Magazine.

Lots of websites, including, the Washington Times and CNN are reporting that there’s a new survey showing that 10% of teens who say that they’re sexually abstinent are testing positive for chlamydia, gonorrhea and trichomoniasis. And while I agree that some of the reasons for this discrepancy might include people being dishonest about being sexually active, forgetting that they had sex during the 12 month period they were being asked about, or having been infected before that time, one of the things they left out is that people define sex in more than one way.

Many people certainly use “have sex” to mean “have intercourse,” especially if they’re talking about male-female interactions. And yet, it’s quite

The Problems with Sex Surveys: Does Delaying Sex Make For Better Marriages?

A whole lot of news sites are trumpeting the announcement that delaying sex makes for better relationships. The source is a press release from Brigham Young University touting a study that claims that if couples who wait to have sex until they get married are better off:

Relationship stability was rated 22 percent higher Relationship satisfaction was rated 20 percent higher Sexual quality of the relationship was rated 15 percent better Communication was rated 12 percent better

Of course, the internet being what it is, these reports have been reposted with the same quotes over and over. That’s probably because the study isn’t being made available by the Journal of Family Psychology until Tuesday.

According to the researcher,

“There’s more to a relationship than
