It’s a cliche that before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes, but that’s because there’s a lot of truth to that statement. After all, once you’ve experienced something from another person’s perspective, it’s much easier to imagine what it’s like for them. That’s one reason why I think pegging can go a long way toward improving things. Pegging is the term for when women use dildos and strap-on harnesses with male partners. (Is there a different term when people of other genders use strap-ons with male partners?) And while the main reason people do it is because it’s lots of fun, I think there’s an added benefit that lots of folks don’t know about.
There have been plenty of books …

Last week, hyperconservative Maggie Gallagher wrote a piece in which she rather unsuccessfully tries to link women’s right to make reproductive choices and anal sex.
The first thing that set off alarm bells for me was her citing a research article mentioned in the book “Premarital Sex in America,” on the possible relationships between abortion and depression. According to the authors, this research may “suggest that abortion may contribute to depression in emerging adulthood, independent of sexual-behavior patterns”. Of course, what she left out was this article from the journal Perspectives on Sexual and Reproductive Health, which analyzed whether women who had had abortions reported depression or low self-esteem within a year of their …

You may have seen my recent post about some very preliminary research regarding lubricants, anal sex, and safety. The folks who first reported it, the International Rectal Microbicides Advocates (yes, it’s not a very sexy name), have announced a free teleconference this Wednesday, June 16 at 3 pm Eastern Time. Here’s the info:
Please join IRMA and AVAC for a global teleconference to help make sense of it all with the folks who presented these new data, Charlene Dezzutti (University of Pittsburgh), Pamina Gorbach (UCLA) and from the Population Council, Othell Begay and Jose Romero. I’ve been telling people how to have safe anal sex for a long time and one consistent bit of information is that you need to use a lubricant. Lube makes anal sex feel better and reduces the risk of hurting delicate tissues, so it’s one of the key factors when exploring anal play. Imagine my surprise when I saw a link to an article on Carnal Nation with the headline New Research: Using Lube for Anal Sex May Increase STI & HIV Risk. Before I start talking about the problem with these and other headlines, I want to summarize the research.
First, there was a study that looked at statistical patterns among sexually transmitted infection (STI) rates and found that people using lube …

I got pointed to a thread on Fetlife about switching from anal sex to oral sex (ass to mouth, or ATM in porn parlance) so I went on over to take a look. (For those who aren’t familiar with it, Fetlife is a social networking site for the BDSM crowd. You’ll need to log in to see the discussion.)
As usual, the debate centers on whether doing ATM without cleaning up is unsafe. Some people are arguing that unless you already have hepatitis or some other infection, you can’t get it from ATM and therefore it’s reasonably safe. Since there’s a fair amount of confusion on this, I decided to ask an expert.
I contacted a public health nurse who tracks certain diseases, gets people …

It’s not often that a truly innovative toy comes our way, but the folks at Aneros have another winner! The Peridise is a fairly slim anal toy with an unusual design. Its shape causes the anus to relax much more than almost any other toy by stimulating involuntary peristaltic contractions.
Peristalsis is the rhythmic contraction of the smooth muscles of the digestive system. Sometimes, the anus is held so tightly that it misses out on these contractions. We might hold too tightly in this part of the body for any of a number of reasons, but whatever the cause, it can hinder arousal, make anal play less pleasant, and just be uncomfortable.
When you insert the Peridise (use plenty of lube, please!), it gently …

I’ve been meaning to write something about one of my all-time favorite toys ever, the Aneros. This nifty toy is the ideal prostate massager for so many reasons. I’m not going to go into the details of how to have anal sex since you can get that info elsewhere. (See, I even gave you a link!) And sometime soon, I’m going to write something about prostate play in general. Instead, I want to talk about why I like this toy so much.
First off, it’s an ideal size for a beginner’s anal toy. It’s slim, but the neck is just narrow enough to keep it in place and it’s long enough that it extends past the anal sphincters, which makes it a bit more …
