The 2010 US Census is coming soon and there’s an important opportunity for same-sex couples to be counted. In the 1990 & 2000 censuses, same-sex couples could identify as married or unmarried partner. While the results weren’t officially reported, the raw numbers show that 145,000 same-sex couples identified as married or “unmarried partners” in 1990 (before any legal recognition in the U.S. even existed) and close to 600,000 same-sex couples self-reported in 2000. This time, there’s an official way to do it:
What Box Do You Check?
If you are in a relationship and you live together, you have two choices. First, one of you will be designated as “Person 1.” If there is no clear favorite for who should be the head of household,

Remember how at the start of the gay marriage debates, a lot of people were claiming that gay marriage was a threat to the institution of marriage? Well, the most recent information from the National Center For Vital Statistics (thanks to HuffPo for the link) shows that after 4 years of gay marriage, Massachusetts has the lowest divorce rate in the nation. The rate of 2.0 divorces per 1000 marriages puts it at the lowest rate since 1940. Clearly, gay marriage hasn’t ruined anything.
Can we spell it out more clearly than that? Well, I don’t think so. Unfortunately, the folks who prefer to spread fear and confusion rather than looking at the actual situation will probably not pay any attention to the numbers anyway.…

I’m sure that you’ve heard plenty of the panicked claims about how same-sex marriage will lead to the inevitable destruction of everything that’s good and wholesome. The slippery slope model of sex is a phrase which I first heard in Gayle Rubin’s article “Thinking Sex” and anyone interested in geeking out on some excellent sexual politics writing should click on the link and read the article.
But if you want a really fun parody instead, check out this sweet video by Garfunkel & Oates. Or read the article and then watch the video. Whatever works for you.

Those are words that I never thought I’d say.
It seems that Dick Cheney, whose daughter is a lesbian, has finally come out and said that he supports gay marriage, but on the state level rather than the federal level since marriage has historically been regulated on the state level in the US. And I have to say that I think it’s pretty cool that he can take that stand and let other conservatives see it.
At the same time, it really would have been great if he could have done it while he was telling President Bush what to do serving as vice president and supporting former President Bush’s policies. I do understand that politics is all about compromise and giving a little …

Does it seem to you that the anti-gay marriage folks are getting a little desperate to come up with a logical, reasonable explanation for why they don’t want gays to marry (besides their homophobia, I mean)? You’ll love this one, then.
GOP Chairman Michael Steele has proposed that if gays are allowed to marry, that will hurt businesses by adding to their health benefits costs. Here’s what he said:
“Now all of a sudden I’ve got someone who wasn’t a spouse before, that I had no responsibility for, who is now getting claimed as a spouse that I now have financial responsibility for,” Steele told Republicans at the state convention in traditionally conservative Georgia. “So how do I pay for that? Who

It seems that the National Organization for Marriage can’t come up with a reason why same sex couples shouldn’t get married that’s not based on bigotry and homophobia, so they’re falling back on creating a moral panic. Check this out.
Pretty remarkable isn’t it. Lies about how people who support queer marriage are going to take away people’s freedom, how churches who don’t support same-sex marriage are being punished, how queer marriage advocates want to decide how people to live their lives and take away their choices. It’s just not true.
At least one of the lines is accurate. One of the actors said, “I am afraid.” And yes, these people are afraid. They’re afraid of queers. It’s called homoPHOBIA for a reason, folks. And …

It turns out that the Iowa Supreme Court has unanimously ruled that same-sex couples can get married as of April 24. Not only that, but Iowa has no residency requirements for marriage so folks can travel there, get hitched and then go home. How cool is that?
And as if that wasn’t enough, unlike California, if the anti-gay marriage folks want to change the state constitution, they have to get legislative approval in two sessions before going to a public vote, which will take at least a few years. As John Saclzi puts it, “Three years is a long time to try to keep people full of hate and fear, especially when they see married couples being happy and productive, and not the least hateable …
