This came my way and I thought I’d pass it along. It’s a pretty fast survey and it’s in the name of science! See below and pass it on. (BTW- their demographic question on gender isn’t great. I’ve emailed them, but feel free to give them your feedback, too.)
The Center for Sexual Health Promotion at Indiana University is conducting a study about the language that men and women use, and the thoughts they have, when thinking about or discussing lubricants that are used for sexual activity. The information collected in this study will be used to develop measures that we plan to use in future research and education activities.
Women and men who are at least 18 years of age are invited to participate …

Pretty much every sex educator I know will tell you- lubricants make sex feel better. They reduce friction, create different sensations, make condoms and other safer sex methods more effective and pleasurable, and enhance both satisfaction and pleasure. A lot of people have have shared plenty of stories to back all that up. Plus, in recent years, the range of lubricants designed for sex has increased tremendously, which would only happen if people were getting enough benefit from using them to support the development of new products.
Even so, it’s incredibly important to have all of this confirmed by research. The fantastic sexologists at Indiana University have published Association of Lubricant Use with Women’s Sexual Pleasure, Sexual Satisfaction, and Genital Symptoms: A Prospective Daily Diary …

You may have seen my recent post about some very preliminary research regarding lubricants, anal sex, and safety. The folks who first reported it, the International Rectal Microbicides Advocates (yes, it’s not a very sexy name), have announced a free teleconference this Wednesday, June 16 at 3 pm Eastern Time. Here’s the info:
Please join IRMA and AVAC for a global teleconference to help make sense of it all with the folks who presented these new data, Charlene Dezzutti (University of Pittsburgh), Pamina Gorbach (UCLA) and from the Population Council, Othell Begay and Jose Romero. The call will be moderated by IRMA’s Secretary and Resident Lube Expert, Marc-André LeBlanc.

I’ve been telling people how to have safe anal sex for a long time and one consistent bit of information is that you need to use a lubricant. Lube makes anal sex feel better and reduces the risk of hurting delicate tissues, so it’s one of the key factors when exploring anal play. Imagine my surprise when I saw a link to an article on Carnal Nation with the headline New Research: Using Lube for Anal Sex May Increase STI & HIV Risk. Before I start talking about the problem with these and other headlines, I want to summarize the research.
First, there was a study that looked at statistical patterns among sexually transmitted infection (STI) rates and found that people using lube …

If you saw my post the other day about how silicone lubricants can be flammable, you’ll be glad to know that we’re always looking out for you and getting the information you need to play safe.
The buyer at Good Vibrations contacted the manufacturers of our silicone lubricants and asked them about this issue and they were all very responsive and helpful. (As an aside, if you ever have a question about sex toys or any other products email us at education@goodvibes.com and we’ll do what we can to help you out.)
Every single one of them told us that silicone lubricants have a very high flash point, which is the temperature at which a substance vaporizes to form a flammable mixture in …

I have to admit that it never would have occurred to me to check and see if lubricants are flammable. After all, when I think about the question of whether lubes burn, I’m thinking more about allergic reactions and yeast infections.
Fortunately, Garnet Joyce ran across a sex guide that said that silicone lubricants are highly flammable and she wrote a blog post about her experiments. It turns out that, yes, silicone lubricants burn.
From a safety perspective, this is super important information. Lots of people like to use candles to make their bedrooms more romantic. Less common, but still relevant, some folks like to play with candle wax to give their partner a sensory experience. And if you wipe lube off on a …
