Researchers in the Department of Psychology at McGill University, Canada are looking for folks to participate in an online survey exploring male body image and sexuality.
From the survey page:
The purpose of this study is to better understand how men evaluate certain features of their genitals, and the factors that influence this perception. It is hoped that better understanding of male genital image concerns and the factors involved may improve body image treatment in the future.
To sweeten the deal, if you want to give them your contact info, participants can enter a contest for one of three $100 amazon.com gift cards. But you don’t have to enter the contest or give any identifying info to take the survey.
You can …

The fabulous Greta Christina wrote an article the other day, in which she speculated on the reasons why there aren’t more men writing about sex. It’s a great piece and I highly recommend it. Actually, I recommend pretty much anything Greta writes.
My observations pretty much match hers. There are a lot more women who write about sex than men. She hits on some of the factors that contribute to that, and I think that there are some others that are worth delving into. I’m going to talk about sex educators and sex writers together because I see many of the same influences in both of these arenas. Anyway, I consider thoughtful sex writing to …

The fact that a lot of money gets spent on erection pills isn’t news. And there are lots of reasons why someone might choose to use them. But one common reason is the desire to improve “male sexual performance”.
The focus on sexual performance is problematic for several reasons. When sex is a performance, it’s something that we do for an audience. That audience might be a partner or it might be the critical voices that we have internalized. And when sex is done for an audience, it becomes much harder to explore our authentic sexual desires because they might come into conflict with our or our partner’s expectations.
Sex as a …

The New York Times has an article about yet another pharmaceutical intervention to “improve” sex. This one is for premature ejaculation (aka PE), a notoriously difficult-to-define situation.
Throughout the history of sexology, different researchers have tried to come up with a good working definition of the term. Masters and Johnson (that’s a photo of them, BTW. Click on it for more info about them) used it if the guy came before his (female) partner. Others have set the minimum sufficient time for intercourse at two minutes, while Sciele Parma, the folks who are manufacturing this new drug peg it at one minute. By comparison, many sex therapists say that premature ejaculation is when the situation causes distress for either or both partners.
Now, I …

It’s not easy to find good images of men’s erections that aren’t all porn-y. Given how many men have internalized all sorts of notions about penises that have little to do with reality, it’s really wonderful to see ErectionPhotos.com, a collection of photos that men have sent in, documenting their penises.
The site has lots of photos of penises in every stage of erection. There are penises of lots of different sizes, shapes, and colors (although most of the men who have sent in photos seem to be white). There are photos of penises with foreskins and without, and there are photos from men of all ages, too.
Most men who don’t have sex with men have never taken a good look …

At Good Vibrations, we regularly have people ask us about the “herbal” pills, creams and other products available at most sex stores. I’m proud to say that we’ve never carried them because we’ve never had confidence that they were effective and safe. I think it’s worth unpacking this a bit more, especially in light of the fact that the Food & Drug Administration has issued a warning about Stiff Nights, one of many such products.
There are a couple of risks that you take when you start looking for pills that haven’t been tested. First, there’s the question of effectiveness. Some products don’t contain anything that actually does any good. Others contain so little of it that there’s no real effect. That can …

I was reading this great post at ScarletTeen.com and this article on RHRealityCheck.com on some of the barriers to developing hormonal birth control for men to take and it’s got me thinking.
The most obvious issue for me is that despite all of the social changes that have taken place over the last century, for the most part, we generally still see pregnancy as something that women do (or as something that happens to women). Of course, it is something that takes place within women’s bodies. But even the increasing number of people who say things like “we’re pregnant” doesn’t change the fact that for most people, it’s “she’s pregnant.” And that’s reflected in the way that men talk about hormonal birth control.
There’s a …

It explains what guys need to do to protect their heterosexuality. Apparently, heterosexuality is even more fragile than we thought. It’s not just gay marriage that threatens it. Something as simply as eye contact can make it fall apart.
Thank goodness for this video. It’ll save the world.

According to this article from BBC News, men who ejaculate regularly have a lower rate of prostate cancer. The hypothesis is that by flushing the fluids that the prostate gland produces, you keep them from stagnating and causing problems. Similarly, women who breast feed seem to have lower rates of breast cancer, so it seems plausible to me.
I seem to recall that in his book Winter’s Light, John Preston described how he developed a bacterial infection in his prostate after his sex drive plummeted due to depression as a result of finding out he was HIV-positive. Since his body was used to having lots of sex, his prostate effectively got backed up and got infected. His doctor told him to masturbate every …

I’ve been meaning to write something about one of my all-time favorite toys ever, the Aneros. This nifty toy is the ideal prostate massager for so many reasons. I’m not going to go into the details of how to have anal sex since you can get that info elsewhere. (See, I even gave you a link!) And sometime soon, I’m going to write something about prostate play in general. Instead, I want to talk about why I like this toy so much.
First off, it’s an ideal size for a beginner’s anal toy. It’s slim, but the neck is just narrow enough to keep it in place and it’s long enough that it extends past the anal sphincters, which makes it a bit more …
