How Pegging Can Help Save The World

It’s a cliche that before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes, but that’s because there’s a lot of truth to that statement. After all, once you’ve experienced something from another person’s perspective, it’s much easier to imagine what it’s like for them. That’s one reason why I think pegging can go a long way toward improving things. Pegging is the term for when women use dildos and strap-on harnesses with male partners. (Is there a different term when people of other genders use strap-ons with male partners?) And while the main reason people do it is because it’s lots of fun, I think there’s an added benefit that lots of folks don’t know about.

There have been plenty of books …

The Difference Between Talking About Sex And Having Sex

One of the complaints about sex education for children is that it sexualizes them. Generally, I hear this sort of thing from people who push for abstinence-only programs even though they don’t work. But whatever the motivations behind it, I think it’s worth taking a look at the idea that talking about sexuality creates sexualization, especially since it’s used to attack sex education.

For example, The Guardian has an article about Lynette Burrows, a “family values” campaigner who said:

I think parents have the absolute right to protect their children from this sort of education which is so unhelpfully obsessed with destroying childhood innocence, in a way that’s reminiscent of paedophilia. To me, anyone who wants to talk dirty to little children is

Spread the Word: Outside the Boxes- Celebrating the Queer Body Erotic

Several years ago, I took the Celebrating the Body Erotic at the Body Electric School and it changed my life. Their experiential classes in erotic energy, breathwork, movement, and conscious sexuality have helped thousands of people discover ways to move past the barriers that restrict and limit their pleasure. I can certainly say that it did for me, as well as lots of other people I’ve spoken with.

Sinclair Sexsmith just let me know about their new class for genderqueer folks, which is super exciting! Lots of tantra and sacred sexuality classes are pretty focused on the gender binary, which can make it hard for lots of people to connect with the practices. I’ve seen some tantra classes for gay men and for lesbians …

Race Bias Influences Who Gets STI Tests

If you need some evidence that we’re not actually in a post-racism world, here’s another bit of proof.

When adolescent women show up at emergency rooms saying that they’re experiencing lower abdominal pain and/or urinary or genital symptoms, just over 26% of them test positive for gonorrhea, chlamydia, and/or trichomonas. And since many adolescents don’t have primary care doctors, they end up at the ER, so it’s especially important that they get appropriate care. Of course, in a society that offered both accurate sex education and universal, affordable health care, we wouldn’t be asking ER staff (who are more used to dealing with actual emergencies) to deal with STIs, would we?

In any case, it turns out that when young women (13-21 years old) …

Sign up for the NSRC Summer Institute on Sexuality

Harm Reduction Cookies

One of the big debates that comes up over and over in sex education is the role and effectiveness of the strategy of harm reduction. And part of why it’s tricky is that a lot of people have so many judgments and opinions about sexual practices that it’s hard to have a reasonable discussion. When folks can’t separate their discomfort, triggers, and squicks from the discussion of sexual practices, things go nowhere fast. So I’d like to use an example from my life that illustrates the value of harm reduction.

First, a little background. I’m pre-diabetic. My body is somewhat resistant to insulin, so even when there’s fuel in my system, it doesn’t get transported into my cells as efficiently as it might. This makes …

Sex Education, Live Demonstrations, and Northwestern University

This post also appeared on the Good Vibrations Magazine.

A few weeks ago, Northwestern University professor J. Michael Bailey did something that ruffled a lot of feathers.

He teaches a lecture class on the science of sexuality and in order to supplement the course, he organizes a series of optional presentations with guest speakers. These sessions are 100% voluntary, none of the material presented is included on exams, and he puts them together on his own time and for no pay. He does it because hearing from people who actually engage in various sexual practices puts a human face on it. His guest speakers have included a panel of gay men, a transsexual performer, convicted sex offenders, swingers, and a plastic surgeon.

Now, I …
