Call for Participants: Research on Women’s Sexual Desire in LTRs

The folks at the Center for Sexual Health Promotion have been cranking out some amazing research about sexual practices lately. I just ran across their newest call for participants: they’re looking for women in long term relationships to explore how they experience sexual desire. Check it out below, and pass it on!

Hello,

Our research team at The Center for Sexual Health Promotion is conducting a study about the ups and downs of women’s sexual desire in the context of long-term committed relationships. Although there is a fair amount of research that has examined women’s sexual desire, little research examines how this may change within the context of one relationship.

Women who are at least 18 years of age and have been in their current

New Research: Young Couples Disagree About Whether They’re Monogamous

This post also appeared on the Good Vibrations Magazine.

I don’t watch a lot of TV these days, but back when I did, there was a subplot on Friends when Rachel & Ross “took a break” in their relationship, during which Ross had sex with someone else. When they got back together, it turned into an ongoing source of drama. Rachel thought that he had cheated because, by her definition, they had still been in a relationship even if they were taking some time apart. Ross didn’t think so since they were “on a break,” which meant to him that the rules of being in their relationship didn’t apply.

Miscommunications of this sort are pretty common, as I’m sure most of you know

Call for Participants: Survey on Healthcare for Transgender Folks

I got the flyer below in my in-box today. While I don’t know this person myself, the person who sent it says that they’re an active supporter of and adviser to LGBTQ youth groups, as well as being dedicated to their own activism and education work. This study has the potential to become a tool that activists and patients can use to advocate for higher levels of appropriate & sensitive health care in the US.

See below and pass it on!

As a graduate student at Smith College for Social Work I am conducting a study to develop a better understanding, from a trans person’s viewpoint, what good care and treatment by a primary care healthcare provider looks like. This recruitment letter has the purpose

Lube Makes Sex Better (Now, we have proof!)

Pretty much every sex educator I know will tell you- lubricants make sex feel better. They reduce friction, create different sensations, make condoms and other safer sex methods more effective and pleasurable, and enhance both satisfaction and pleasure. A lot of people have have shared plenty of stories to back all that up. Plus, in recent years, the range of lubricants designed for sex has increased tremendously, which would only happen if people were getting enough benefit from using them to support the development of new products.

Even so, it’s incredibly important to have all of this confirmed by research. The fantastic sexologists at Indiana University have published Association of Lubricant Use with Women’s Sexual Pleasure, Sexual Satisfaction, and Genital Symptoms: A Prospective Daily

New Research: More Evidence That Porn Doesn’t Cause Sex Crimes

A few months ago, I wrote about some research showing that when porn becomes legal in various places, the rate of sex crimes stays about the same or decreases. This is contrary to one of the common anti-porn arguments that we’ve heard from various directions. And now, there’s even more evidence showing that porn doesn’t lead to an increase in sex crimes.

In their paper Pornography and Sex Crimes in the Czech Republic, researchers Milton Diamond, Eva Jozifkova and Petr Weiss chart the changes that took place when porn became legal in the Czech Republic. During the communist rule (1948-1989), “[p]ornography, by any definition was absolutely prohibited. Even the depiction of naked bodies, as well as descriptions of sexual activities in fictional novels or

The Politics of Porn, The Porn of Politics

This post also appeared on the Good Vibrations Magazine.

This isn’t the usual look at the politics of porn.

According to the article Changes in pornography-seeking behaviors following political elections: an examination of the challenge hypothesis, there’s an interesting connection between how people vote and their porn habits. It turns out that states that voted for the winner of a national election search for porn online than states that voted for the loser. Here’s how it broke down:

According to the Challenge Hypothesis, competition increases testosterone in males, which leads to an increase in various behaviors. Further, the winners of competitions tend to have higher testosterone levels than the losers, and it even extends to spectators. Male fans of winning sports teams tend to

If you’re as frustrated as I am with the biased writing about porn that we usually hear, and if you like to geek out on some well-designed and well-written research, you’ll enjoy From The Devil in Miss Jones to DMJ6 – power, inequality, and consistency in the content of US adult films. Written by Dr. Chauntelle Anne Tibbals, it’s a fascinating look at some of the trends in porn over the last few decades.

Dr. Chauntelle (as she likes to be called) selected 26 “key adult films” from three different eras: Reels (1957-1974), Video (1975–1994), and Digital/Virtual (1995–ongoing). She analyzed and coded them using Grounded Theory to look

Emotional Skills Help Men Live Longer

This post first appeared on the Good Vibrations Magazine.

It’s been known for a while that men tend to have a shorter life expectancy than women. While there are a few guesses as to why that is, one factor is having a macho attitude.

Time Magazine reports that some new research shows that emotional openness increased boys’ mental health through middle school. Further, it’s known that men who try to tough it out when they need medical attention don’t get the care they need. Being able to ask for help is a much more effective way to deal with life’s challenges than trying to go it alone. As the saying goes, many hands make light work.

And yet,

Amazing New Research About the Clitoris

ScienceBlogs has an amazing writeup about some excellent research on the clitoris: “The Clitoral Complex: A Dynamic Sonographic Study”. Scientists conducted sonograms of the vagina and vulva and have confirmed something that sex educators have been saying for ages: the clitoris is shaped like a wishbone, with a lot more going on inside the body than most people realize. Here’s the sonogram, along with an anatomy drawing to make it easier to see what you’re looking at. All of these images came from ScienceBlogs.

The clitoral bodies (CB) are clearly seen along the sides of the vagina (V). Even more interesting is this photo, from a slightly different angle (in these, the participant
